D. Bruce MacKay began his undergraduate years as a Music major but switched to Anthropology after discovering the joys of learning about other cultures and people. Following some years as a musician, he graduated from the University of Lethbridge in Anthropology. He developed his interest in the religions of other cultures and in particular that of ancient Israel by doing a Masters of Theological Studies at Harvard Divinity School. MacKay completed his Ph.D. at the University of Toronto in Religious Studies with an examination of ethnic identity and the religion of ancient Israel. During this time he contributed as a Field Archaeologist to a major archaeological project in Israel. He has taught in a wide range of subject areas including Archaeology, Religious Studies, Anthropology, Geography, Philosophy and Liberal Education. MacKay is currently the Coordinator of Liberal Education in the Faculty of Arts and Science. His research focuses on the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) and, especially, on the teaching a learning of liberal education, a significant aspect of which is the development of knowledge and practices that contribute to community engagement.
